Central Ridge Pool opens May 6

The Central Ridge Pool in Beverly Hills located at Lake Beverly will open on Saturday, May 6, 2017.

Pool passes are available for purchase at the Central Ridge Community Center, 77 Civic Circle, Beverly Hills.

Severe weather ends for county; cooler, drier days ahead

Citrus County has wrapped up two days of severe weather, and what lies ahead, the National Weather Service (NWS) said, are cooler and drier days.
 
The turbulent weather began on Tuesday, when the county was placed under tornado warnings twice, first at 5:56 p.m. and again at 9:43 p.m., by the NWS.

Commissioner Jimmie T. Smith was invited guest speaker on Thursday at the Rotary Clubs of Citrus County’s Upward Bound program on Thursday. Upward Bound is a partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Citrus County and Citrus County School District.

Weather service issues spring flood outlook

2017 Hydrologic Spring Flood Outlook (National Weather Service)
The National Weather Service on Thursday issued its hydrologic spring flood outlook for West Central and Southwest Florida.
 
Affected counties include Citrus, Levy and Hernando counties.
 
The NWS predicts a low threat for the next several months. In its outlook, the NWS said, "The Florida dry season has lived up to it`s name and then some.

Floral City Community Building changes owners

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday handed over the keys to the Floral City Community Building and the land it sits on to the Floral City Lions Foundation, Inc.
 
The Lions have leased the building from the county for about 20 years.
 
The property was given outright to the Lions "for the purpose of promoting community interest and welfare." And the vote to approve the giveaway was 5-0 in favor of the action.

FWC encouraged by 2017 manatee survey

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported a preliminary count of 6,620 manatees in Florida waters. 
 
A team of 15 observers from 10 organizations counted 3,488 manatees on Florida’s east coast and 3,132 on the west coast of the state.

(OCALA, Fla.) Feb. 20, 2017 — The Homosassa Game and Fish Club presented a check for $2,356 to the CF Foundation to increase student scholarships.

The club partnered with the CF Foundation in 2005 to establish an endowed scholarship for CF students from Homosassa and Citrus County.

Region’s jobless rate dips to 5.9%

OCALA, Fla. (Jan. 20, 2017) – The jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion area was 5.9 percent in December 2016, down 0.2 percent over the month and the same as the region’s rate a year ago.

Transit offers new program for senior residents

The Citrus County Transit’s Transportation Disadvantaged Advisory Board has approved a new option for residents 60 years of age and older.
 
The new program invites any resident that is age 60 and older to get a free pass to ride the Deviated Fixed Route, and have a discount on the Para Transit service.

Fire damages Inverness home

A fire just before 7 a.m. on Monday damaged the home of William and Rhonda Scheiterle, owners of the Misty Meadows Blueberry Farm.

No injuries were reported.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, Division of Fire Rescue responded at 6:54 a.m. to the structure fire at 8795 E. Grey Lane. Firefighters found a single-story home with moderate black smoke coming from all of the eaves. Firefighters confirmed all occupants were out of the home, and also disconnected the power and gas.
