Citrus County Democratic Party opens HQ in Crystal River Mall

The Citrus County Democratic Party opened their headquarters at 591 Crystal River Mall on Saturday, April 22.

The headquarters is open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Voter registration, vote by mail ballot requests, FL Voting Rights Restoration Amendment petitions and volunteer activities will be available during these hours.

Severe weather ends for county; cooler, drier days ahead

Citrus County has wrapped up two days of severe weather, and what lies ahead, the National Weather Service (NWS) said, are cooler and drier days.
 
The turbulent weather began on Tuesday, when the county was placed under tornado warnings twice, first at 5:56 p.m. and again at 9:43 p.m., by the NWS.

A gruesome case of apparent rage surfaced on Sunday in Hernando and ended with the murder of a woman and the suspect arrested and charged with the crime.
 
Just before 10:30 on Sunday, Citrus County deputies responded to a home on East Benjamin Street after receiving a call that a woman was being stabbed.

Commissioner Jimmie T. Smith was invited guest speaker on Thursday at the Rotary Clubs of Citrus County’s Upward Bound program on Thursday. Upward Bound is a partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Citrus County and Citrus County School District.

Woman uses social media to confess 'crimes'

This anonymous woman has posted confessions to a homicide and sex crimes on several social media websites. Citrus County detectives are asking the public to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-ANY TIPS with any information about the woman. (CCSO photo on March 17, 2017)
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Friday said it was fully aware of a video posted on Facebook, and other social media sites, in which a woman confesses to a homicide that allegedly occurred in Citrus County, as well as various sex crimes.
 
Citrus County detectives have been looking into these claims since late last year, the CCSO said in a statement released on Friday. 
 
"We have spent many hours investigating the statements made by this individual, including detectives traveling out of state to interview her.

County to close public recycling centers

The county is closing its public recycling centers.

The only place residents will now have to recycle will be the county landfillat 230 W. Gulf to Lake Highway in Lecanto, which the county said on Thursday will not cost residents a fee to use.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is investigating what appears to have been an inmate suicide in the Citrus County Detention facility in Lecanto.

Sumterville man's traffic stop yields major drug haul

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday stopped a Sumterville, Fla., man's vehicle just before 4 a.m. for speeding just in front of the Sheriff's Operations Center.
 
What deputies found was a major drug stash inside the vehicle, weapons and money.
 
The Sheriff's Office said the driver, Daniel Glenn Purvis, 36, was aggravated and not being very cooperative. The deputies called K9 Deputy Indorato and his K9 partner Repo to assist. K9 Repo immediately alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics.

Weather service issues spring flood outlook

The National Weather Service on Thursday issued its hydrologic spring flood outlook for West Central and Southwest Florida.
 
Affected counties include Citrus, Levy and Hernando counties.
 
The NWS predicts a low threat for the next several months. In its outlook, the NWS said, "The Florida dry season has lived up to it`s name and then some.

Floral City Community Building changes owners

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday handed over the keys to the Floral City Community Building and the land it sits on to the Floral City Lions Foundation, Inc.
 
The Lions have leased the building from the county for about 20 years.
 
The property was given outright to the Lions "for the purpose of promoting community interest and welfare." And the vote to approve the giveaway was 5-0 in favor of the action.
