Sheriff Dawsy honored by county commission

Retiring Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy on Tuesday was formally recognized by the county commission for his years of service to the county.

He was honored during a special time of the meeting with a plaque, with the thanks of county commissioners.

It was the last public meeting on Tuesday for three Citrus County Commissioners, and there were smiles and tears as they expressed thanks to both their families and to county residents.

Departing will be Commissioner Joe Meek, Commissioner Dennis Damato and Commissioner Scott Adams.

During a special time during the start of the meeting, it was Commissioner Meek who spoke about his time on the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners.

Animal activists vent at Citrus BOCC meeting

Animal activists took their complaints about the Citrus County Animal Shelter in Inverness and it's former director to the Citrus County Commission chambers on Monday.

It wasn't pretty to watch, either, as the activists vented about the shelter in a variety of ways, which included harsh words for Tobey Phillips, a longtime Citrus County employee who was appointed to the shelter as its director.

Voters speak minds at 2016 Primary polling places

The final unofficial results have been posted in Citrus County's 2016 primary races.

Depending on your political viewpoint, there were a couple of surprises.

Beginning with the U.S. Senator races, in which 21,832 total votes were cast, Marco Rubio outdistanced his rivals with 63.78 percent of the votes (13,924). Carlos Beruff was second, with 24.45 percent (5,339). Dwight Young took 8.20 percent (1,790 votes), and Ernie Rivera took in 3.57 percent of the vote (779 votes).

Suncoast Parkway extension to come after other work

OCALA -- The I-75 Relief Task Force has re-racked its focus on extension of the Suncoast Parkway and will instead target the interstate and other current road networks.

Meeting in Ocala on Friday, the six-county task force decided to put other work first and worry about any extension of the Suncoast Parkway later.

Royal campaign announces support for Prendergast

The Phil Royal for Sheriff campaign on Sunday night posted on its Facebook page that it supports Mike Pendergast for Citrus County Sheriff.

Royal, the frontrunner in the 2016 Citrus County sheriff race died unexpectedly on July 18, leaving the community and Royal supporters shocked and unsure of where to place their support in the upcoming primary election, the post read.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and The Key Training Center have decided to finish the 2016 Run for the Money on Saturday,  in honor of retired Capt. Phil Royal.

Even though not physically present Wednesday night, it was plain to people attending the first non-partisan political forum that the presence of the late Phil Royal was still on the minds and hearts of all who attended.

The forum, held at the College of Central Florida's Citrus Campus, was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Citrus County and Citrus County Council.

Phil Royal, a candidate for Citrus County Sheriff, died Monday morning during "Run for the money," a Key Center fundraising event, at age 47.

His official website broke the sad news.

"Today the Royal for Sheriff campaign is deeply saddened to inform the citizens of Citrus County of the untimely death of Phil Royal. This unspeakable tragedy occurred as the result of a seizure Phil experienced while running in a charitable fundraising event.

The consensus among Citrus County Commissioners on Tuesday was that the county's current animal shelter is a proper place for its inhabitants.

But reigning in costs, be it for the current shelter, or for a new one, is the rub.

Having banned fracking in Citrus County, the Citrus County commission is now getting the vapors over electronic cigarettes, or E-Cigs.

Citrus County Commissioner Scott Adams asks Commissioner Ron Kitchen, who also chairs the county's Tourism Development Center, to not target groups for advertisement. Instead, he said, the county should only be advertised generically.

A $4,000 ad inviting the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) community to visit Citrus County drew fire from Citrus County Commissioner Scott Adams.

Adams said he had hundreds of supporters wanting the county to stop advertising to specific groups.

County passes anti-fracking ordinance

The Citrus County Commission on Tuesday unanimously passed its anti-fracking ordinance.

Up to this point, 11 Florida counties have passed anti-fracking ordinances. A large political block, "Floridians Against Fracking" has been a major contributor to the movement to ban all fracking in the state.
