Career criminal arrested after counterfeiting crime spree

A counterfeit money trail ended on Monday with the arrest of an Inverness woman.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said that Teresa Hare, 46, of 1505 S. Mohican Trail in Inverness, now faces multiple fraud charges after using numerous fake bills at several local businesses throughout the county.

CCSO detectives earn honors

Two Citrus County undercover narcotics detectives honored

Two Citrus County Sheriff's Office detective have been selected for special honors by the Florida Narcotics Officers Association.

Both serve in the CCSO's Tactical Impact Unit (TIU).

The TIU regularly fights drug use in Citrus County, by executing search warrants, arresting offenders and seizing large quantities of illegal drugs.

TIU Sgt. Ed Blair nominated the detectives to Region III of the Florida Narcotics Officers’ Association for Region III Officer of the Year awards. The names of the two undercover detectives are being withheld to protect their identities.

Goodworth announces retirement from fire service

Citrus Sheriff Fire Rescue Fire Chief and Public Safety Bureau Chief Jim Goodworth on Wednesday announced his intent to retire, effective Aug. 4, 2017.
 
Goodworth has been in the public safety arena for more than 34 years.
 
"It is with much consideration and a heavy heart that I am submitting my intent to retire," Goodworth's resignation letter said. "I love my job and I love the family I work with. That family was extended on Oct. 1, 2011, as Fire Rescue joined the Citrus County Sheriff's office.

County seeks donations for animal shelter

Elderly Inverness woman charged with animal cruelty

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Division on Monday charged an elderly Inverness woman with animal cruelty and took her 34 cats.
 
It all started Monday when deputies were dispatched to a house on East Iona Lane after the homeowner, Barbara Smith, 75, called an electrician to do some work on her home.
 
When the electrician came to her house - they refused to do the work due to the unsanitary conditions inside the home, which is when the Sheriff's Office got involved.

Flight from Ocala ends in Inverness man's arrest

An Inverness man was arrested Monday night, after being pursued from Ocala by a Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy.
 
Arrested was Michael Gordon Crabtree, 57, of Inverness, who was reported to have been operating his vehicle without proper registration.
 
Crabtree's arrest report said that a pursuit began in Ocala by a Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies, and then crossed county lines, at which time Citrus County deputies fell in behind the chase.

Prendergast reorganizes Sheriff's Office

Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast today announced he has reorganized the sheriff's office.
 
Prendergast said his changes took effect immediately.
 
The move comes shortly after former Undersheriff Buddy Grant was placed on administrative leave after an anonymous complaint was filed against him and an internal investigation proceeds.
 
"I have evaluated what's best for the community we serve and how best to keep our officers safe," said Sheriff Prendergast in a media news release today.

A tip about possible animal abuse led to the arrest Saturday of an Inverness couple, and the seizure of 36 dogs.
 
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said that Ryan McLean, 26, and Deana Feldman, 47, both of 3866 S. Alpine Ave.

She is Shauna Mariah Carpenter, described as 5-foot-6 inches, weighing 135 pounds and has brown hair and hazel eyes.
 
She was last seen in the city of Hernando.

Community leader's death inspires new crime prevention initiative

Justice, closure and, now, a new crime prevention tool brought on by lessons learned from a 2014 missing person case involving a retired minister in Homossassa.
 
Billy Shuler, 69, of Homosassa loved collecting rare coins, but went missing after making contact with a man about a possible coin collection purchase. But Shuler never returned home.
 
He was well-known in his community and was nicknamed the “coin dealer." Those who knew Shuler said he was a man who would go out of his way to help others.

Garage fire claims family vehicle

An early morning fire in a garage attached to a Pine Ridge home was destroyed in the early morning hours. 
 
Citrus County Sheriff Fire Rescue was dispatched at 3:47 a.m. to 3163 W. Daffodil Drive to put out the fire.
 
Pine Ridge Engine 20 arrived on scene at 3:54 a.m., where they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage.

Woman's Club celebrates 100-year anniversary

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed May 9, 2017 as the 100-year anniversary of the General Federation of Woman’s Club of Inverness (GFWC).

The GFWC Woman’s Club of Inverness has been working for the betterment of Citrus County since 1917 and has been responsible for many educational firsts in Citrus County including the establishment of the first library and Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners on May 9 proclaimed the month of May as Older Americans Month in Citrus County.

For Fire Services, It's back to the future

Six years after calling on then-Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy to take over fire services from the county in 2011, the Citrus County Commission has called it back into the fold.

The commissioners voted 4-1 on Tuesday during a special meeting to take fire services back, after complaining they had received little or no information that board members had requested.

Deputies looking for missing Pasco County man

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking the whereabouts of 29-year-old Jeremy Miles Crayton.

Crayton, a black male, was reported as missing on May 8 from Pasco County.

A Burgundy Ford Explorer, with right front-end damage, was found on the Citrus County side of Dunnellon, on that same night. Crayton was driving that vehicle at the time of his disappearance.

Work begins on Ozello Trail Bridge Hurricane Hermine repair

The first bridge west of John Brown Drive on Ozello Trail will have intermittent, minor repair work done over the next 30 days.
 
Drivers are asked to use caution, as there will be flagmen in the area and one-lane traffic when work is in progress.

Homosassa man killed after crashing into billboard sign

The Florida Highway patrol says a Homosassa man was killed on Saturday after his vehicle struck a billboard sign and he was ejected.
 
The man has been identified as Wilmer Hager, 29.
 
The Florida Highway Patrol said that the incident occurred at about 12:15 a.m.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate Jeremiah “Cherokee” Rowe regarding an active warrant for felony capital sex battery, victim under 12 years of age. 
 
He is 5’9” tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.
