County names new Engineering Division director

Citrus County Department of Public Works has named Randall S. Olney, P.E., as the new Engineering Division Director.
 
Olney started in his new position on Monday.
 
Olney graduated from University of Florida with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.

Region’s jobless rate dips to 5.9%

OCALA, Fla. (Jan. 20, 2017) – The jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion area was 5.9 percent in December 2016, down 0.2 percent over the month and the same as the region’s rate a year ago.

Two arrested during SWAT drug search

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team served a search warrant for drugs on Friday at 9 S. Desoto Street in Beverly Hills. 
 
This is the second drug search warrant investigation at the house in the past three months, the Sheriff's Office said.
 
The resident of the home, Terry Gaitor, 44 of Beverly Hills, was arrested again Friday morning on drug charges.

Search on for Homosassa bank robber

Suspect identified n the robbery of the Bank of America in Homosassa on Suncoast Boulevard.
The Sheriff's Office said a man walked into the Bank of America on Suncoast Boulevard shortly after 2 p.m. and robbed the bank.
 
CCSO investigators are actively looking for the suspect. No word if the suspect displayed a gun.

Markers installed at Hells Gate in Homosassa

Citrus County has been working closely with the United States Coast Guard for the past several months to improve the navigational waterways of the Homosassa River.

One of the improvements suggested was to install “informational” markers at Hells Gate notifying boaters of the narrow channel ahead.

On Wednesday, Citrus County completed the installation of these “informational” markers. New pilings and signs were installed on both ends of Hells Gate to notify boaters of the narrow channel ahead.

Altercation leads to shooting, crash

Citrus County deputies are unravelling a mystery at a Circle K in Inverness where an argument on Sunday led to a shooting and a traffic crash.

Transit offers new program for senior residents

The Citrus County Transit’s Transportation Disadvantaged Advisory Board has approved a new option for residents 60 years of age and older.
 
The new program invites any resident that is age 60 and older to get a free pass to ride the Deviated Fixed Route, and have a discount on the Para Transit service.

Fire damages Inverness home

A fire just before 7 a.m. on Monday damaged the home of William and Rhonda Scheiterle, owners of the Misty Meadows Blueberry Farm.

No injuries were reported.

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, Division of Fire Rescue responded at 6:54 a.m. to the structure fire at 8795 E. Grey Lane. Firefighters found a single-story home with moderate black smoke coming from all of the eaves. Firefighters confirmed all occupants were out of the home, and also disconnected the power and gas.

Brush fires pop up in Crystal River area

The burning of the middle of a pine tree is called the Widowmaker.

On Thursday afternoon, Citrus Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to two separate brush fires near Penn Drive off of U.S. 19 in Crystal River.

Florida Division of Forestry and the Crystal River Fire Department responded to assist.
