Sheriff's Office pulls missing man's body from Crystal River canal

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday recovered the body of a Homosassa man from a Crystal River canal.

According to Sheriff's Office spokesperson Gail Tierney, Ewell Achord, 78, of Homosassa was visiting a friend at her home at 3930 N. Seminole Point in Crystal River on Tuesday. They had been outside burning leaves and small sticks in a burn barrel out in the yard.

Sheriff’s Office FTO program finds its mark

On May 14, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office made some history of its own when Class 2010-01, perhaps better known as the inaugural class of the agency’s all-new Deputy Advanced Recruit Training (DART), graduated.

Before nearly 100 family members, field training officers, coworkers, fellow deputies and command staff administrators, Sheriff Jeff Dawsy had the distinct honor of swearing in seven new deputies as part of a formal, first-ever ceremony held at the CCSO Emergency Operations Center in Lecanto.

Home-invasion robbery reported in Citrus Springs

CITRUS SPRINGS – Just before 1:30 a.m. today, deputies were dispatched to a home invasion robbery at 9267 N. Mendoza Way.

When they arrived at the house, they found the victim, Deliliah Rogers, 26, lying face down on the floor with a blanket over her. The residence had been turned inside out.

The victim’s two little girls, ages 4 and 6, were found asleep in their beds. The children and their mother were unharmed.


House-numbering ‘service’ not supported by Sheriff’s Office

The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is letting residents know that there’s a private company currently soliciting in the county for a service that involves painting house numbers on driveways, reportedly for easy identification either at night or by responding emergency personnel.

Residents are saying that entire neighborhoods are being targeted, and they’re finding the company’s advertising affixed to their mailbox.

Virginia man pleads guilty to child porn charges

A man who had an online relationship with a 13-year-old Florida girl pleaded guilty Friday to one count each of possession and distribution of child pornography.

The relationship began, Gary Lee Rimmer said, in 2006, while he was living in Greene County in Virginia. At that point, the girl was 13 and he was living in Greene County. Rimmer, now 55, pretended to be a 20-year-old man named Jason online and in phone conversations, according to the U.S. attorney’s office for the Western District of Virginia.

Hernando man faces child abuse charges against boy, 2

A 41-year-old Citrus County man is facing charges of child abuse against a Beverly Hills boy, 2.

Arrested today was Kevin John McCommic, 1019 E. Oriole Court in Hernando.

According to the arrest report, McCommic is said to have used excessive force at least three times on the child's buttocks, which left bruises and marks. During the same incident, the report says, McCommic is charged with striking the child on the left side of the head, which left bruises behind the child's ear, head and inner facial cheek area.

Sheriff's Office makes arrest in store robberies

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Friday made an arrest in connection with the July 23 robbery of two separate Kangaroo gas stations in Homosassa.

Both robberies occurred during the early morning hours. Arrested was Charles David McKenzie, who lists no permanent address in Homosassa.

The suspect is believe linked to a robbery at one store on U.S. 19, as well as the other store on Cardinal Street, which is just off U.S. 19. A review of both store's video surveillance systems showed a man with a knife, who demanded money of the store clerks.

Crystal River man charged with sexual battery

A Crystal River man was charged on Tuesday with the sexual battery of a 10-year-old girl.

Arrested was

, 24. The victim, the Sheriff's Office says, was known to Haecker.

According to the arrest report, a CCSO detective was made aware of a pending sex offense investigation at one of the county's elementary schools. The deputy on scene at the school told the detective what the girl had said, and that the girl named Haecker as the offender.


Digital media equipment helps speed sex crimes evidence procedures

Specialized equipment that combines robotics, software and printers into a complete digital publishing process is ready to put the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit on the cutting edge of forensic analysis as it relates to sex crimes involving juveniles.

ICAC detectives would be the first ones to say how labor-intensive their work is when it comes to building a solid case against, say, someone facing charges of possession of child pornography.

Retired NYPD officer charged with exposure

A retired New York Police Department deputy was arrested on Friday and charged with exposing himself while in a neighbor's yard.

Arrested was Thomas A. Gallagher Jr., 66, of Beverly Hills.

The arrest report says that shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Gallagher was seen performing a lewd act behind his neighbor's truck while wearing only a woman's skirt. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant for Gallagher's arrest, and he was handcuffed and taken to the county jail.


CCSO looking for missing Crystal River resident

CRYSTAL RIVER - Citrus County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking for a 38-year-old Crystal River man who’s no stranger to disappearing from his North Chameleon Point residence for several days at a time.

However, just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Shaun Shopland signed himself out of Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center against doctors’ orders, and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

It appears he left the hospital on foot, traveling in an unknown direction.  If he ended up taking a cab, it’s unconfirmed at this time.

Woman charged with attempted murder of Floral City husband

Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies on Wednesday arrested a woman for the attempted murder of her Floral City husband.

According to the arrest report, the woman, Melanie Orise Glass, 35, allegedly used plant food and pool chemicals to poison her husband's drinks.

The couple had been having marital problems, a divorce was in the works, Melanie had been seeing someone else and she had moved out of the Floral City home to 18042 S. Porsche Place in Spring Hill at the end of October, the arrest report says. She was arrested in Floral City.


Sheriff's Office busts two Hernando grow houses

HERNANDO - Members of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Impact Unit (TIU) served two search warrants and made three arrests on Thursday at separate, yet related, residences in Hernando.

What they discovered were two sophisticated grow operations yielding hundreds of quality, high-grade marijuana plants.

Homosassa man arrested on child porn charges

A 32-year-old Homosassa man is in the Citrus County jail, charged with 19 counts of child pornography possession.

Arrested on Wednesday was Bradley Dee Mathews, 10 Boston Ivy Court.

According to the Sheriff's Office arrest report, the CCSO Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC) was investigating illegal downloading of what was believed to be child pornography, when investigation revealed a computer at Mathews' Internet address might be involved. The CCSO obtained a search warrant and went to Mathews' residence.


Public asked to help find missing runaway youths

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding three young runaways.

Two of the runaways, Rachel Warren, 15, of Sugarmill Woods, and Vanessa Simmons, 17, of Crystal River are habitual runaways. A third runaway, Gabriel Ruiz-Cain, 16, of Inverness, is also being sought.

Warren is described as a is a white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 117 pounds.  She has long brown hair and hazel eyes. Simmons is a white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. She has blonde hair and brown eyes.

Lecanto gas station robbed

Citrus County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the robbery today of the Chevron gas station in Lecanto.

The CCSO says a black male entered the station at 5 p.m. at 2205 W. Norvell Bryant Highway.


Monday's bomb scare appears due to computer glitch

A computer malfunction is thought to be the cause of a bomb scare on Monday in Inverness.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office reports that just before 8:30 a.m., dispatchers received a call that a computer at Inverness Medical Imaging (2105 Highway 44 W.) had displayed a message that alleged someone had brought a bomb in.


Crystal River shooting case sent to State Attorney's Office

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Monday turned over the case involving a Dec. 14 shooting in Crystal River to the State Attorney's Office (SAO).

The victim – Larry Henriquez, 30, of Orange Park, Fla. – went to 2790 N. Reynolds Ave. in Crystal River, where an argument ensued. Henriquez knew the shooter, identified as Richard Carroll, 41, who is also the homeowner.

Henriquez was shot during the argument, and was later transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.


Bomb scare in Inverness doesn't pan out

Citrus Daily has learned there was some kind of a bomb scare at 9 a.m. today at Inverness Medical Imaging.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office blocked off the building with patrol cars, and the fire department was staged at the automotive dealership next door, our source reported. Occupants of the building were released.

CCSO spokeswoman Heather Yates confirmed there had been a scare, but said it didn't amount to much. Citrus Daily is awaiting a report of the incident.
