Public Health celebrates 125th anniversary

The county commission on Tuesday presented a proclamation acknowledging the 125th Anniversary of Florida Public Health, and 64 years of health service in Citrus County.

The yellow fever epidemic that occurred in Florida during 1887-88 brought to light the need for control of this and other diseases in Florida to prevent future epidemics.

In response to this need, the Florida Legislature created the State Board of Health on Feb. 20, 1889, now named the Florida Department of Health, which has a presence in all Florida counties to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida

The efforts of the Florida Department of Health have helped create healthier living environments and a better quality of life for the 140,000 residents and visitors in Citrus County.

The dedicated public health professionals who work for the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County serve the needs of this community by providing health services, monitoring and responding to emerging health threats - and promoting healthy choices for all who live, work and play in Citrus County.

The Florida Department of Health in Citrus County has grown from a one room office in 1950 to three fixed medical clinics and a mobile medical clinic, a fixed dental clinic and a mobile dental clinic, a vital statistics unit, and environmental health unit, a disease control unit, a public health preparedness unit, a Healthy Start unit, and a Women, Infant and Children (WIC) unit.

The WIC program alone brings over two million dollars to our community.
