County to study feasibility of veterans assisted-living facility

An area of interest to the EDC is in the area where the Lecanto Veterans clinic is currently located, in the Citrus County Resource Center.

The facility would be called Veterans Village, the EDC said, and provide housing and convenient access to healthcare without having to travel long distances for care.

It would be a facility that would contain from 100 to 150 rooms. Commissioners asked Interim County Administrator Jeff Rogers to investigate the feasibility of the facility, which would involve the lease of county property. The facility could possibly be a public-private partnership, but that has not yet been decided by commissioners.

The EDC is working with Dr. Paresh Desai, creator of the Veterans Village concept. He and the EDC have also been working with local, state and federal officials to bring together a public-private consortium. The EDC said that, in a recent meeting with Congressman Gus Billirakis, the congressman said the concept could be considered as a national model for other veterans care facilities.

Rogers will report back his findings at a future board meeting following his feasibility study.
