A 15-year-old Lecanto High School 9th-grader shot himself in front of classmates. He was transported to a Tampa hospital for treatment. At approximately 10:30 this morning, Citrus County deputies responded to Lecanto High School after receiving reports of shots being fired from within the school.

The CCSO said that it was an isolated incident. That 15-year-old student was airlifted to a Tampa hospital, the CCSO said, and deputies quickly secured the weapon and the school.
All other students and staff are safe. There is no threat at this time, and the lockdown has been lifted.

During a news conference this afternoon, Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy and  Citrus County Schools Superintendant Sandra "Sam" Himmel answered reporters' questions.

Dawsy said the student was listed in stable condition. "This could have gone many different ways; but thankfully, no one else was injured," he said.

Himmel said there will be no school on Wednesday because it is Veterans Day, but she said crisis management teams will be available, should students want to avail themselves of those services. School will resume on Thursday, she said.
