Mom, off-duty deputy thwart child abduction

An attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl was thwarted in Hernando on Tuesday by a tough mom and an off-duty deputy.

Citrus County Sheriff's deputies responded at 11:42 a.m. to the Dollar General at 2560 N. Trucks Ave., regarding something happening inside the store.

The initial call indicated the caller heard screaming, but dispatchers then learned that an attempted child abduction was in process.

Sentenced: Matthew Cooper

Matthew Cooper, 46, of Crystal River, received two consecutive life sentences with a 25 year minimum/mandatory in the Department of Corrections for Attempted Second Degree Murder with a Firearm and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm in Judge Howard's court.
