Apollo Beach woman drowns while scalloping in Crystal River

Citrus, County, news, Florida, Crystal River, drowning

On Monday evening, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) contacted the Citrus County Sheriff's Office about a drowning that occurred earlier in the Gulf.

The CCSO was told that 47-year-old Tammy Barth and her husband Mark Barth, from Apollo Beach, had been scalloping in Crystal River all day.

Both Mark and Tammy exited their boat and scalloped separately from each other, which they normally do. During the late afternoon, Mark returned to the boat when he saw storms approaching. He entered the boat and blew the air horn for Tammy, which they normally do when one party returns.

Tammy did not answer the air horn call. After a brief search by Mark he called distress over VHF marine radio and Coast Guard and FWC arrived. Tammy was located face-down and unresponsive by FWC at 6:47 pm and declared deceased.

An autopsy was to be performed on Tuesday; however, at this time, the Sheriff's Office said,  it appears to have been a drowning.
