Floral City man shot after brandishing gun at deputies

Sheriff's Office starThe Citrus County Sheriff's Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are sorting out what happened today when a Floral City man was shot by a CCSO deputy.

Deputies had been called to try to help the man, Douglas Veltman, 58, when Veltman produced a gun and was then shot by a deputy when Veltman refused to show his hands and put down the weapon.

The Sheriff's Office said a concerned neighbor had called to seek help for Veltman, who was believed to be possibly suicidal. Deputies arrived on scene and encountered Veltman outside of his home. They asked to see his hands, and at first he did not comply;  however, after repeated requests, he did brandish a weapon, the Sheriff's Office said.

Veltman was subsequently injured and flown to a Tampa Hospital. The CCSO said is not known at this time if Veltman fired on deputies. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on scene conducting an investigation into the incident, the CCSO said.

In accordance with agency policy, the officers involved, who are uninjured, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigative process.
