The Citrus County Sheriff's Office on Monday was made aware of a fish kill and possible sheen on the water on the Withlacoochee River near the end of Turner Camp Road.

The CCSO contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) who opened an investigation into the matter.

According to FWC, the investigation is ongoing, and they will reach out to other agencies, if warranted, to determine if the water is safe. At this point in time, it is too soon to determine the cause of the dead fish. The FWC is the lead in this investigation; however, they are keeping the CCSO informed of their progress.

Sheriff Prendergast is monitoring the situation closely, the Sheriff's Office said.  The Florida Division of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Protection and other agencies are also aware of the incident.

The FWC released this statement:

"The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has received multiple calls about a fish kill in the Withlacoochee River in Citrus County and is investigating. Residents are asked to report any fish kills by calling 1-800-636-0511 or submit a fish kill report online at https://public.myfwc.com/FWRI/FishKillReport/Submit.aspx.
