No Rezoning sign for The Village at Pirate’s Cove in Ozello

Ozello, FLA. -– "Yard Sign Army" donated 50 “No Re-zoning” yard signs to the "Committee to Save Ozello."

The signs went quickly at the Committee’s June 17 meeting.

The yard signs are intended to amplify residents’ objections to a Tennessee developer’s application to rezone property from residential to commercial in order to build a multiuse complex.

The Committee to Save Ozello has been fighting against commercial rezoning in one of Florida’s most well-preserved communities since 2012. They have defeated the rezoning plans before, but the developer has returned with a new plan for The Village at Pirate’s Cove.

The plans include four condominiums, a motel with meeting rooms, a pool and a restaurant and bar. An online petition to save Ozello is at www.ozello.net/petition-to-save-ozello/

Ozello, Fla., is located between Crystal River and Homosassa in unincorporated Citrus County. The island chain is in the St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve, habitat for 25 birds, mammals and reptiles listed as threatened, endangered or species of special concern by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
